Just a few short months ago I was pretty certain that one of the few things I could never ever become in any fandom was a Harry Potter slasher. Firstly, the books didn't appeal to me all that much - they were nice, but not obsession material for me; secondly, the idea of slash in a children's book fandom just squicked me. Well, I am still fairly certain that I will never get tempted to actually read or write slash involving the kids from the books. . . but I have discovered the appeal of slashing some of the grown-ups. Particularly, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, the angsty couple.
Oh, and such delicious angst it is.
Sirius Black, deeply flawed hero might-have-been; destined to be winner of the Shittiest Life Ever Award.
Remus Lupin, mild-mannered werewolf, poor, loyal; utterly self-denying.
Actually, I don't necessarily need to read about these two in a relationship or having sex. Friendship stories that adhere to canon are just as good. It's just that with these two, for some reason I have no problem at all imagining slash, whereas with many other popular slash pairings I'm having major difficulties. And not only do I not have any problem imagining them in a relationship; I also find it makes them even more interesting. Also, it makes a lot of sense for them to be an item of sorts, because they are so clearly dependent on each other, especially in Order of the Phoenix, and because they are almost predestined to give comfort to each other - no one else is going to understand them as well as they are able to understand each other.
They are screwed up in so many different - and intriguing - ways.
I want to see them work through the mess that is their lives and come out the other side.
The books don't give them that chance, but fan fiction does.
